Kossack, do not give up. Our fight has only begun. Barack cannot do this by himself, as much as we wish he could. The Junior Senator from Illinois is just that: A junior Senator who gets pretty good press.
Remember this?
If after debate, the Senate appears ready to pass legislation granting telecom providers retroactive immunity I will use any and all legislative tools at my disposal, including a filibuster, to prevent this deeply flawed bill from becoming law. More and more, Americans are rejecting the false choice that has come to define this administration: security or liberty, but never, ever both. For all those who have stood with me throughout this fight, I pledge, once more, to stand up for you."
The fight in the House is over. See the roll call, and mark your traitor Rep down for elimination at the earliest possible time.
Now, pick up the telephone. Call your Senator.
And while you're at it call Senator Chris Dodd. Here's the statement on his site:
"I cannot support the so-called ‘compromise’ legislation announced today. This bill would not hold the telecommunications companies that participated in the President’s warrantless wiretapping program accountable for their actions. Instead, it would simply offer retroactive immunity by another name.
"As I have said time and time again, the President should not be above the rule of law, nor should the telecommunications companies who supported his quest to spy on American citizens. I remain strongly opposed to this deeply flawed bill, and I urge my colleagues in Congress to join me in supporting American’s civil liberties by rejecting this measure."
Well let's hold him to it.
Look, I fully support moaning and whining. I'm a damn champion. But once you get it out, get out the cell phone or pick up your land line or, heck, an old-fashioned pen.
Make your thoughts known to the next line of defense. Because there is a next line of defense on this. Senators, yes, even Senators change their minds from time to time. Call yours.
Then call Chris Dodd and let him know how Americans from every corner of the country are now looking to him for leadership, at a moment when we really, truly need it.
Tell him that the Constitution is calling and it is time to fulfill his oath.
Tell him.
Chris Dodd: (202) 224-2823; (860) 258-6940
